These Mysteries of the Seas Will Shock You
What do you think the sea world is like? Incredible, marvelous, romantic or creepy, terrifying and mysterious? Or maybe a combination of all of these. The deep blue ocean has been extensively studied for decades and decades; yet it remains a mystery in many ways. The sea has always been a topic of mysterious tales. There are plenty of stories about of ships, planes, submarines, and people who have gone on exploration journeys only to vanish without a trace, fueling conspiracy theories.
The Baltic Sea anomaly
It is presumably a UFO crashed in the Baltic Sea. The odd circular 60-meter thick object was found at the bottom of the sea in 2011, and scientists still have no idea why it's there or what it is. People like to compare it to the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars. The divers who discovered the "anomaly" said their equipment stopped working as they approached it.
The island of Yonaguni Jima in Japan
This is an ancient underwater "pyramid" in Japan that is often referred to as "Japan's Lost City of Atlantis." Tourists can freely dive at the mysterious site. Some experts believe that the structures could be all that's left of Mu, a fabled Pacific civilization rumored to have vanished beneath the waves, according to National Geographic. It's also possible that the formation is natural.
Submarine disappearances in 1968
There were at least four, unrelated, incidents of submarines seemingly vanishing in 1968. The most famous case is probably that of the USS Scorpion SSN-589 accident. It sank off the coast of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. Theories about what happened vary from an explosion to a torpedo explosion as a result of overheating. The other submarines that disappeared are the INS Darak (Israel), the Minerve (France) and the K-129 (Soviet Union).
Bermeja Island vanishing
This was an island in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. One day it was clearly visible; the next day it was missing, without a trace, fueling rumors of conspiracy theories. Bermeja was used in the 1970s as a landmark on which Mexico based its claim to a 200-nautical-mile economic zone that included major oil reserves. Some say rising sea levels and/or the effects of tectonic activity made it disappear beneath the waves, according to Mysterious Universe.
The “milky sea” phenomenon
Milky seas are not common but they have been seen for centuries. Yet, they are still unexplained. These events are when the surface of the ocean, often from horizon to horizon, glows with a continuous uniform milky light. The most plausible explanation is that it is caused by blooms of bioluminescent bacteria, according to experts. Bacteria will glow with a continuous light, under the right conditions.
SS Baychimo/”Ghost Ship of the Arctic”
This is one of the most famed ghost ships ever. The 230-foot 1,500-ton fur-trading steamer was abandoned in 1931 when the ship got trapped in Arctic ice. Some people stayed behind to keep an eye on the ship, but the weather intervened. The combination of higher temperatures, melting ice and a storm confined them to their shelters for a few days. When they finally got out, the boat was gone.
The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle – or the Devil's Triangle – is perhaps the most famous mystery in the world. It is the area of about 500,000 square miles between Bermuda (once known as the Isle of Devils), Miami and San Juan in Puerto Rico. Ships passing and planes flying are said to have vanished in thin air or deep sea without any explanation. Many hypotheses have been offered over the years as to what's happening there, some of which are geological or hydrological.
Convergence of Baltic and North Seas
This incredible spectacle is a highly debated topic. The convergent point of the North and the Baltic Seas occurs in the province of Skagen in Denmark. However, because of the differing rates of densities of the seas' waters, the sea waters continue to remain separate in spite of their convergence, according to Marine Insight.
Bimini Road
The ancient stone formation makes many wonder if it is remnants of a lost city like Atlantis. Experts have tried for many years to find out with certainty whether the huge, flat stones are natural or remnants of a lost civilization. The 13-foot stones are cut at right angles, seemingly set purposefully in straight lines, according to Ancient Origins. This impressive formation stretches for half a mile.
Underwater crop circle
There is no definitive explanation for the mysterious underwater crop circles found about 80 feet below the sea. They have been thought to be the result of puffer fishes' pursuits for finding their mates. These circles, discovered under the waters of the Japanese island of Anami Oshima, are about 6 feet in diameter and have shells and other decorative items. Some people think they were formed by aliens.
