Surprising Ways to Relieve Your Seasonal Allergies

Itchy eyes, runny rose and constant sneezing are some of the many symptoms associated with allergies. For many people, the changing of the seasons brings many allergy triggers; pollen being one of them. Try to avoid being in an environment surrounded by plants, animals and dust.

Plant a low allergy garden

“You don’t have much control on vegetation outside of your own garden, but in your own garden you can choose plants which are less likely to cause seasonal allergies,” says Max Wiseberg, airborne allergies expert and creator of the HayMax organic allergen barrier balm. “Grasses (including lawns) should be avoided as they are always wind pollinated and therefore can produce large clouds of pollen.” Instead, choose plants with large flowers that are pollinated by insects – these have heavier pollen which rarely becomes airborne. Wash/brush your pets regularly

“They may hate you for it, but cat and dog fur is perfect for trapping pollen,” Wiseberg says. “When they walk into your home, they’re walking pollen bombs! Give them a bath, and brush regularly to reduce pollen.” Aim to have a pet and pollen free zone in your home, preferably the bedroom, he adds.


Dry clothes indoors, rather than on a clothes line

Wiseberg says that although it seems obvious, you’d be surprised at how few allergy sufferers are aware of this. “Dry clothes outside on a high pollen count day, and you’re asking for trouble. The clothes act as a perfect pollen trap. Before you know it, wardrobes are full of pollen."


Spicy food

“If Thai tickles your taste buds, then load up on ginger as it acts as a natural decongestant,” Wiseberg says. “Turmeric is a renowned anti-inflammatory, so [it] may help to relieve congestion. Chillies? Clear those sinuses!”


Lay off the booze

Alcohol contains histamine, the chemical also in your body which, when prompted by an allergen (pollen in this case), causes your body to react with symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, wheezing and itching,” Wiseberg says. “More histamine, more symptoms.”


Get a good night’s sleep

“Not so surprising, this one. After all, quite a lot of life’s problems seem somewhat less problematic after a good night’s sleep,” Wiseberg says. It’s just one of the things that can really help manage your allergy symptoms. “A UK study showed that people who slept at least 7 hours a night suffered significantly milder symptoms than those who slept no more than 5 hours each night,” he adds.


Take a shower and get changed

“During the day, pollen becomes trapped in hair, stuck to skin and covers our clothing. It makes perfect sense that washing away the pollen and changing into fresh clothing will make you feel better,” Wiseberg says. “Just be sure to keep pollen covered clothing out of the bedroom and straight into the laundry basket, as pollen can be shaken from your clothing, settle on your bed and become a problem during the night.”
