Haunting Photos Of Abandoned Places

If the Halloween spirit to you is best exemplified by a truly terrifying experience, you may want to organize a road trip and visit more than just one of the places on the following list.

Abandoned theme park

This is the abandoned carousel and Ferris wheel at the amusement park in the center of Pripyat in Ukraine where the Chernobyl disaster occurred in April 26, 1986. The city has remained a ghost town ever since.

Deserted hospital

This is an empty ward at a deserted hospital. Abandoned medical facilities and institutions for treating mentally ill people don't take much to look haunting. You just need to imagine what has taken place there...

Abandoned prison

This is a bed frame in an abandoned cell in a prison. It looks like it was "designed" straight out of The Count of Monte Cristo book, with the "luxurious" addition of an actual bed.

Forsaken library

This is the library in the uninhibited resort hotel "Beryozki" in Istra, Russia. The name means "little birch tree." There was a special shop that was open only to foreigners and to locals who had hard currency as money.

Psychiatric facility

This is an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Volterra, Italy. It was home to more than 6,000 mental patients but was shut down in 1978 because its practices were deemed cruel.

Shipwreck

This is the site of old wrecks near the village of Teriberka, Murmansk oblast, Kola Peninsula, Russia. The village is where Leviathan, a critically acclaimed Russian drama that was nominated for Oscar in 2015 was filmed.

Wolf's Lair

This is Adolf Hitler's military headquarters during World War Two. It's located in the village of Gierloz near Ketrzyn, Poland. The attempted assassination of Hitler took place here.

Bunkers remains

This is what's left of the Atlantic Wall at the beach of Thyboroen in Denmark. Built during World War Two, the bunkers still stand visible and illustrate the former defense line.

Abandoned rural house

This is what a rural farmhouse in Wyoming looks like. The snow on the mountains in the background enhances the beautiful image. It makes you go skiing as long as you find a cabin in the middle of the woods away from the crowds.

Old gas station

This is an old gas station in the middle of a desert mountain. You will stumble upon similar and equally haunting images of deserted gas stations and other facilities if you go a road trip along the iconic Route 66. The legendary 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica are often referred to as the ultimate American adventure on the road.

Exclusion zone

Radiation masks are laying around after the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. The city was home to 49,000 residents until it was evacuated and abandoned in 1986. The area has been deemed safe to visit and some outfitters there offer guided tours.

Prison cell

This is a cell block at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Standing in ruins today, it looks like a haunting city of disintegrating cellblocks and deserted guard towers.

Old steel bridge

This is not among the most gorgeous bridges in the world, and some may argue that it's not really among the scariest either where one step can end your life, but it certainly gives you an eerie feeling.

Flooded building

This is a dramatic view of damaged escalators in abandoned building in Taiwan. The full moon shining on the cloudy night sky through collapsed roof completes the hauntingly beautiful image.

Abandoned castle

This is a dilapidated luxurious room in an abandoned castle. It's not hard to believe that someone lived there, and it looks like it's won't need much work to be in a livable condition again. It may even join the ranks of incredible castles where people can actually stay overnight.

Old castle

The photo of this old castle almost looks unreal with the Arch of the Milky Way over it. This is actually the ruins of the Herburt's Castle in Kudryntsi, Ukraine. It is the most highland castle, located on the mountain almost 2,000 feet above sea level.

Fallen rollercoaster

This is the Jet Star rollercoaster fallen into the ocean. The steel roller coaster operated at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey from 2002 until it was swept into the Atlantic Ocean by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Christ of the Abyss

Flooded and then cemented to the sea floor of the Mediterranean over half a century ago, the underwater statue of Cristo degli Abissi is one of the most famous dive destinations in Italy. It is found between Camogli and Portofino. It commemorates the diver and the first Italian to use SCUBA gear Dario Gonzetti.

Kolmanskop, Namibia

This is an abandoned building being taken over by encroaching sand in the Kolmanskop ghost town in the Namib Desert. It was once the site of a diamond rush and a bustling city for German miners. The sandy "town" gives off eerie vibes that attract curious souls, including ghost hunters.

SS Ayrfield, Australia

Mangrove trees are growing on the shipwreck of the steam collier SS Ayrfield at Homebush bay in Sydney, Australia. The ship was used to carry supplies to Pacific allies during World War Two.

The Maunsell Sea Forts

The armed towers were built in the Thames and Mersey estuaries during the World War Two to help defend the U.K. Ultimately, all the sea forts were decommissioned by the late 1950s. People were able to take a look inside but nowadays organized tours are rare.

Shipwreck in the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle – or the Devil's Triangle – is perhaps the most famous mystery in the world. It is the area of about 500,000 square miles between Bermuda (once known as the Isle of Devils), Miami and San Juan in Puerto Rico. Ships passing and planes flying are said to have vanished in thin air or deep sea without any explanation.

Chris McCandless’ magic bus

This must be the most famous bus in America. It became well-known after Christopher McCandless's body was discovered inside in 1992. He was the real person on whom the character in the successful movie Into the Wild is based.

Sunken steeple

This is a winter scene at Lake Reschen with a sunken gray steeple. Lake Reschen is an artificial lake located in the western portion of South Tyrol, Italy, near the Reschen Pass.

Bodie, California

This is a ghost town in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California. Bodie was established in 1859 and people came for the gold. When they didn't find as much as they were hoping, people left. Most of the ghost town has remained untouched.
