The gym is a place to focus on fitness and health, at least for most people, but, unfortunately, there are some members who treat the place like their own personal playground. From the grunters to the hoverers to the talkers, the lack of respect is not what you signed up for.
Shower without flip-flops
Among the most common occurrences are people shaving their legs, so you can often see hair on the bathroom floor that water didn’t wash down the drain. Protect yourself from bacteria living in the shower stalls. How often do you think they get cleaned?
Correct people on their form
If no one asked for your advice, don’t give it. People will probably get defensive and dismiss your recommendation anyway. Also, are you sure that you are actually right? You could be doing things the wrong way, too.
Exercise in crowded areas
These include anywhere near the exits, walkways or aisles. People are constantly going in and out or are walking from one machine to another. You’re probably not going to get anything done because you’ll have to keep stopping to let them pass. You may also hurt them or yourself.
Leave equipment sweaty
Of all offensive things you can do, leaving your sweat on a piece of equipment for someone else to clean is probably the worst. How would you like to clean after someone else? Also, leave a frequently used area dirty exposes people to viruses, bacteria and fungi.
Pressure other into giving up equipment
Don’t be rude and wait your turn. Everybody is in the same boat; people are there to exercise, not to just do a quick warm-up because it’s inconvenient for you.
Use machines for anything but working out
Don’t be a machine-hog either
Everyone has been there – patiently waiting for that person to get off of the machine you so desperately want to use. Be aware of how much time you are spending on the equipment. Don’t look at your Facebook or use the machine to stretch. Once you’re done, simply hop off the machine so the next person can use it.
People did not go there to the gym to get hit on. Keep your comments to yourself. Most gyms have regulars and you can easily become “the person” no one wants to even talk to. Also, you may even lose your membership if enough complaints ate filed against you.
Take someone’s equipment
It’s understandable that you want to be in and out of the gym as you probably have many chores to attend to after a workout. So do most people. Just because you see a dumbbell on the floor doesn’t mean that no one is using it. He or she may be taking a 1—second rest between sets. Ask before you take.
Spit into the water fountain
That’s just gross. Be an adult. Don’t do it.
Look at your phone while walking
Texting and walking is just plain dangerous. There are people working out around you – lifting weights, running, doing aerobic exercises. The chance of you accidently walking into one of them because your head is down in your phone is high. Plus, you won’t only hurt yourself, but you may potentially hurt the other person involved.
Copy what trainers show clients
You may like what you see but don’t do it on your own. Personal trainers often come up with their own exercises. Spying on them is like stealing their work, and it’s disrespectful. You’ll probably be doing it wrong anyway. Just ask him or her to show you; they probably won’t mind.
For all the attention-seekers lifting weights, chill out — no one wants to hear your grunting. Have respect for others in the gym and stop clanking your weights and being loud. Also, keep your shirt on. The gym and the locker room are not your personal bathroom.
Have loud conversations on your phone
No one has to listen to you. Yelling is especially annoying in the morning. People are trying to start their day in a positive way and listening to your problems is not a way to do that.
Listen to loud music
Techno music may pump you up but no one is obliged to listen to it. Some people may not mind upbeat music but most likely none of them want to hear it during your entire workout routine. Put your headphones on and enjoy the music to yourself.
Music pumps you up; it has that effect on many people. While there’s nothing wrong with plugging in your headphones at the gym, it doesn’t mean you have free reign to belt out your favorite tune. It’s obnoxious and distracting. Remember that you’re at the gym and not a karaoke bar.
Leave weights all over the place
This has to be one of the most irritating gym habits. People who pile their weights onto bars, use the equipment for a long period of time, and then just get up and walk away. Stop leaving your weights on the bar. It’s just rude. The same goes for leaving weights on the floor where you just exercised.
Don’t be that guy. Be respectful of the people around you. Dropping weights can cause a loud sound and vibration. It may cause other members to lose their focus. Place them down easily; this will also help you prevent injury.
Be late for a class
This usually applies to new members. They tend to arrive late, and can be incredibly disruptive as they try to find the room to drop their mat. If you’re going to attend a class, please arrive on time and be courteous of the other members.
Rush into the studio before class of over
Wait until the people from the previous class have left and the studio is empty before going inside. How much more of a better spot do you think you’re really going to get if you’re there first? The workout will be the same anywhere you do it.
Stare at people
It’s difficult not to notice the attractive men and women in the gym, but noticing and staring are two entirely different things. So stop scrutinizing the girl doing squats or the man doing a bench press. It’s just plain creepy.
Go to the gym when sick
Gyms are not very clean places in general. Enough germs are already lurking in there. There is no need for you to cough all over the machines and equipment, too, potentially getting tens of people sick. Do them a favor and go home to rest.
Take long showers
Again, this is not your personal bathroom. Other people also need to freshen up after a long workout. You are not the only person in a rush, and taking 20-minute showers is annoying and offensive. Yes, the water does feel good, but wash off and jump out. No need to waste time.
Is your mouth is dry? Drink water. Other than the fact that chewing during a workout can limit your breathing and cause you to choke, it’s annoying to the people around you. When it dries out, where do you put it? Hopefully not under the water fountain or hidden behind the machines.
