15 Symptoms That Your Hormones May be Out of Balance

Stress has a sneaky way of building up in you until it becomes a serious problem. Blame it on hormones. They control metabolism, weight, thyroid function, sleep cycles, and stress response. Symptoms are not usually sudden, unfortunately. Eating more and the inability to fall asleep are vague signs that can be nothing severe or can be hiding a chronic condition which you need to address.

Chronic fatigue

This may be a sign that there is an imbalance in your cortisol rhythm, which can lead to adrenal fatigue, one of the symptoms of which is tiredness, according to the Hormone Health Network. Fatigue is also a very common and important sign of low thyroid. Since hyperthyroidism increases your metabolism, many individuals initially have a lot of energy, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists says. However, as the hyperthyroidism continues, the body tends to break down, leaving you exhausted.

Irritability

Neurotransmitter imbalance leads to or exacerbates hormone imbalance. Symptoms such as mood swings can occur in response to these fluctuating levels, according to Integrative Psychiatry. Swinging mood can be a sign of low testosterone, low estrogen (because it has the ability to increase serotonin, approaching menopause, and hyperthyroidism.

Cravings

High cortisol or insulin levels could be to blame if you are reaching for sugary snacks you normally would not even think about. Craving salt and salty snacks is a classic symptom of adrenal fatigue. When hormone levels are too low, the kidneys excrete too much salt which can lead to salt cravings to help the body restore its balance. A study showed that elevated levels of sodium slow down stress hormones normally released in stressful situations.

Inability to fall asleep

A woman may be entering menopause. The ovaries gradually decrease production of estrogen and progesterone, a sleep-promoting hormone. The shifting of ratios of hormones can contribute to the inability to fall asleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation.  Insomnia can result from endocrine problems in both men and women. An overactive gland can make you stay awake by making you anxious and increasing your pulse. The condition overstimulates the nervous system, making it hard to fall asleep.

Puffy eyes in the morning

Fluctuating hormone levels increase the likelihood of the body retaining fluid around the thin skin underneath your eyes. This is one reason why pregnant women often have puffy eyes – their hormones levels are constantly changing. Overactive thyroid gland can also lead to swelling of the area under the eyes. Sometimes even medication is needed to treat the symptom.

Thinning eyebrows

If you notice that your eyebrows have thinned, and in particular, if the outer edge of the eyebrows have thinned — or even disappeared —have your thyroid checked. This loss of hair in the outer edge of the brows is one of the very unique signs that point specifically to an underactive thyroid, according to the National Academy of Hypothyroidism.

Hormones control every aspect of weight loss. When they are out of whack, no matter how hard you and try and how strictly you follow a healthy regimen, the extra pounds will not drop. High estrogen may be one reason, according to research. Another is low testosterone – when its levels are low, an increase of body fat may follow, studies show, even if you work out on regular basis.

A lot of people who are overstressed experience change in habits such as eating more, which can result in weight changes. The extra pounds people gain under stress are usually stored as abdominal fat because the adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormone, make you hungry for carbs and fat. Decreasing estrogen levels can lead to decreased interest in sex and dryer vaginal tissues, resulting in painful or uncomfortable sex, according to the Mayo Clinic. Progesterone and testosterone are other hormones that affect libido. Lower levels can cause a drop in desire or sexual pleasure.

Hot flashes

This is a common symptom due to an imbalance in their hormone levels, according to the Women in Balance Institute. The cause may be low levels of estrogen but also be too much estrogen and too little progesterone, or other hormone imbalances in the body that come from the adrenals, ovaries, thyroid pancreas or gastrointestinal tract.

Constant anxiety

Hormonal imbalances may cause anxiety, even though it is a psychological condition. It’s possible that the body releases too much thyroid hormone which may trigger panic attacks. But stress can be causing too much cortisol production, which leads to further anxiety symptoms. High doses of insulin create a state of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), one symptom of which is anxiety.

The ligaments in breasts depend on estrogen for elasticity. With age, the amount of estrogen in the body decreases, which has a negative effect on the elasticity of the skin, resulting in sagging breasts.

Loss of appetite, as well as greater appetite because of an overactive thyroid, is a common symptom, according to the American Thyroid Association. It is normal to be hungry after exercising or another intense physical activity. But feeling like you need more – and that happens every day for several weeks – may be a sign of diabetes or thyroid abnormalities.
