The best bicycle depends on what kind of biking a person does. Different models are built for specific needs, and a few are made with versatility in mind. Some brands have perfected and innovated new technology, establishing themselves as the leaders in the industry.
The more specialized a brand becomes, the more its name tends to become recognized. Names such as Trek and Giant gain strength with popularity, and they create bikes in all categories. Each brand has its unique take on the bicycle and what makes it the perfect model for a biker who prefers comfort, durability and speed.
“Most high-end bicycles hover around 6.8 kg and may cost upwards of $10,000. Frames alone can cost near $5,000,” Larry Engay, who has been riding bikes for decades, says. “Customers in the U.S. tend to view carbon fiber bicycles made abroad in places such as European countries as being more exotic, where the handmade nature of the frame is valued more over the mass production of Asian nations such as Taiwan,” he adds.
Metal tube bicycles in production still serve the general cycling public. Budget bikes for the modern day cyclist enthusiast still consist of carbon fiber, but usually a lower quality grade. Mass production countries like Taiwan serve the cycling community with good-quality frames and components still find themselves having to shake off the “Made in Taiwan” negative reputation, “although those opinions are quickly changing,” Engay says.
Bicycle manufacturers like Trek and Cannondale are highly sought after by the European market, but less popular amongst Americans. But as road cycling is gaining in popularity from the “Lance Armstrong” effect, European companies are expanding their foothold on the American market, he adds.
