A late addition to the roster of events to mark the 20th annual Bike to Work Day in the San Fransciso Bay area on May 8: cyclists in Mountain View, Palo Alto and Menlo Park will be able to ride alongside a Tour de France level professional racer for 20 minutes.
Team Garmin-Sharp, which will be competing in the Tour of California next week, is providing the pro riders. Taxi-sharing service Uber will arrange the rides.
Cyclists on the Peninsula who also have the Uber app will see a bike icon show up on their screens for the duration of the morning. The rides will take place between 10am and 2pm. Team Garmin-Sharp will provide the lucky riders with Cervelo bikes.
The Bay Area’s Bike to Work Day is one of the larger events in the region’s National Bike Month celebrations. Hundreds of thousands of cyclists are expected to take advantage of free coffee and snacks being given out along the region's bike lanes during the morning and evening commutes on May 8. Large group rides in Oakland and San Jose are planned for the early evening.
National Bike to Work Day will be observed across North America on May 16.
