America's 10 Fittest Small Cities
#10 Hilton Head, S.C.
Hilton Head Island scored exceptionally well in our general health status category which helped to earn it the final spot on our fittest small cities list. Chances are this South Carolina sanctuary was pushed to the top of our rankings thanks to its reputation as a relaxed resort town with 12 miles of ocean beaches and credentials as host to the PGA Tour’s annual Heritage Golf Classic.
The largest settlement on the Big Island, Hilo is home to the only ski destination in Hawaii. The city sits atop two volcanoes and overlooks Hilo Bay. Much of the population maintains a healthy weight and a schedule of regular exercise, though very few of them actually ski down Mauna Kea.
#8 Kalispell, Mont.
Kalispell is a Salish word that translates to “flat land above the lake;” a fitting name for a city situated just seven miles north of Flathead Lake, which happens to be the United States’ biggest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. As an area that provides direct access to Glacier National Park and a close proximity to the Whitefish Ski Resort, much like our other highly fit cities, Kalispell offers locals an extensive expanse of wilderness with plenty of space to play.
#6 Lebanon, N.H.
Another city with a population that demonstrates high participation in aerobic exercise, Lebanon is home to Dartmouth’s Medical School and is also considered the cultural hub of the micropolitan statistical area. With a recreation department that offers programs like youth skiing and snowboarding trips, farmers markets, a series of running races, community clean up days, and summer concert series it’s clear that this small city considers health and wellbeing a high priority.
#5 Brookings, S.D.
This small city rated highest on our list for overall health and its residents easily surpass the amount of exercise recommended by the government. With two public pools, several baseball fields and a large scale summer recreation program, Brookings' Parks and Recreation Department helps ensure the population stays fit.
#4 Heber, Utah
According to our rankings Heber City residents place a high emphasis on exercise (especially aerobics), which makes perfect sense for a quaint city nestled amidst magnificent mountains. A close neighbor to our number two fittest city, Provo-Orem, and the ever popular Park City ski area, Heber offers locals a wide range of active community events like county fairs, farmers markets, concerts, and community gardens.
#3 Kapaa, Hawaii
Kapaa is an area geared toward tourist accommodations, but the locals who call this small city home enjoy all the health benefits Hawaii has to offer. The population gets plenty of aerobic exercise and has some of the lowest stress levels in all of America.
#2 Bozeman, Mont.
Low obesity rates, a population that demonstrates healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and a high general health status ranking earned this Montana town—home to notable attractions like the Montana Arboretum and Gardens, three different ski areas, parts of Yellowstone National Park, and the Lewis and Clark Caverns—the second place spot on our fittest small cities list.
#1 Kahului-Wailuku, Hawaii
Hawaii is a hub for adventure tourism, prime surfing spots and laid back lifestyles and Kahului is a local haven in a state regularly frequented by visitors. Low stress levels, a population of healthy weight and one that gets plenty of aerobic exercise, make this small city the most fit in America.
