Let’s cut right to the chase; when it comes to weight loss, shedding the final few pounds is arguably one of the most difficult parts of the process.
I know, because I’ve been there before; I eventually became so frustrated that I resorted to hiring a personal trainer. Nothing I tried (e.g., doing tons of crunches at the gym every day, spending hours on the elliptical) was working, but I was determined to reach my goal.
I’m not saying that you need a personal trainer—although I’m thankful and glad that I had the opportunity to work with one (and then eventually get certified myself), but obviously it’s not a viable option for everyone. That’s not a problem, though, because from what I’ve learned, you can lose those last few pounds on your own.
All it takes is a better understanding of what you need to do and a bit of extra determination to get it done. It’s not easy and it definitely requires discipline, but once you reach your final goal you’ll certainly know it was worth it.
I talked to fitness experts Shannon Barbadian and Lori Kenyon Farley to collect a roundup of tips that will help you lose that last bit of super stubborn fat. Barbadian is a Pilates and cycling instructor and the co-founder of Defy Gravity, a Pilates and indoor cycling studio in California. Farley is a co-founder of Ritual Wellness, a juice cleanse service with a focus on real, whole foods.
But before you take a look at their expert tips consider the following: Jillian Michaels refers to the “last 10 pounds” as vanity pounds.
“The term describes our desire to lose weight that, as far as our bodies are concerned, actually feels healthy,” she wrote on her blog.
Of course we all feel better when we feel like we look our best. But for example, if your initial goal was to lose 55 pounds and you feel healthy after having lost 50, don’t feel like you have to lose those last five pounds. Remember that health and wellness matters more than your weight. Don’t let the number on the scale control you.
That said, if you’re determined and motivated to tackle your goal and follow all the way through, well then more power to you. Follow these eight tips and you’ll say sayonara to those final few pounds in no time at all.
