8 Dorm-Friendly Snack Ideas for Before and After Your Workout

It’s time to head back to school after a summer of fun in the sun, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your beach body.

You have a membership to the school gym and your best workout buddies on speed dial, but what about your diet?

Making smart choices about what to eat before and after your sweat sessions is a vital part of meeting and maintaining your fitness goals, but eating healthy can be difficult when you don’t have a full kitchen at your disposal. That’s why I’ve composed a list of eight nutritious and dorm-friendly snacks to help you fuel up before hitting the gym and recover post workout. 

Pre-Workout Snacks
Eating before you workout will give you the energy to stay strong through an intense training session and ensure that you don’t burn muscle instead of fat.

Pre-workout snacks should include a mix of simple and complex carbs, which will break down quickly to give you energy for your workout, plus a little bit of protein to help support your muscles as you workout.

Post-Workout Snacks
After a workout, your body’s energy stores are depleted and your muscles will have tiny tears, so it is important to help your body replenish nutrient-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats and muscle-building protein. Also, don’t forget to re-hydrate!

Pre-Workout Snack: Apple Slices with Almond Butter

Apples have both simple, quick-burning carbohydrates and complex, slow-burning carbohydrates giving you energy that will carry you through your workout. Adding one tablespoon of almond butter will cause the sugars to enter the bloodstream more slowly and keep you from running out of steam during longer gym sessions.

Pre-Workout Snack: Instant Oats with Nuts

Instant oatmeal is one of the easiest snacks to whip up, and because it is rich in fiber, energizing carbohydrates will be released into your system gradually. I like the gluten- and sugar-free varieties topped with a palm-full of tree nuts, which also help stabilize blood sugar, and many times I'll add one tablespoon of an antioxidant-rich superfood protein powder like my Philosophie Berry Bliss blend.
