Slideshow: New Olympic Events for 2014

Next year's Winter Games in Sochi to fly higher than Olympics past

The World Cup in Sochi, Russia, may be taking a hit this week thanks to warm weather and lack of snow, but absent any exploding meteorites, the 2014 Sochi Olympics are scheduled to go ahead as planned in almost exactly one year.

The 2014 Games will see a further X-Game-ification with the addition of ski and snowboard slopestyle events, as well as men and women’s ski halfpipe. (Snowboard halfpipe debuted in 1998 at the Nagano Olympics.)

“Such events provide great entertainment for the spectators and add further youthful appeal to our already action-packed lineup of Olympic winter sports,” said IOC president Jacques Rogge when announcing the events’ inclusion in July 2011.

Check out the new events—and two that didn’t quite make the cut—in our slideshow.
