Shop Smart: Knowing Your Nordic Skis

How your body weight should affect your choice

"Looking for your own set of Nordic skis? Shy away from buying from a friend or on a site like Craig’s List and go right to a specialized shop to get fitted. Every ski comes out of the factory with different flex, so even a ski that is good for my body weight might be too stiff for your body weight. If your skis are too soft, it will feel like a wet noodle under your foot, and if they are too stiff, you’ll feel like you aren’t flat when gliding. Having the right equipment is essential for proper Nordic skiing, so remember: One ski does not fit all."

—Igor Guziur grew up cross-country skiing and downhill skiing in the Czech Republic. After moving to the U.S., he now works as the Activities Manager at Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa in Colorado.
