The infamous beer mile is a fusion of two sports, running and what beermile.com calls “digestive athletics.” The object of the sport is to chug four beers and run a mile in the fastest time possible.
From beermile.com: “The most common format of the beer mile requires a single participant to drink a full-sized beer, run a quarter mile, then repeat the process three times. This results in the consumption of four beers and the running of four quarter miles (hence the beer mile). The entire process is timed. The total time is often used as a measuring stick of competency.”
It may sound like an elaborate college drinking game aimed at making as many people puke as possible—and that might be exactly where the sport started, no one knows for sure who ran the first ever beer mile. One thing is for sure, though, there is often puking involved and it usually means a penalty lap.
So, should you run a beer mile?
Answer the following questions:
—Are you of legal drinking age? (If not, try the chocolate milk mile)
—Do you have a few friends willing to do it with you?
—Do you have transportation (a designated driver) to and from the race site?
—Are you okay with burping/ vomiting/ witnessing someone else vomit?
—Are you open to trying it?
If you answered yes to all of the above questions then you should go for it. You can look up the official rules on beermile.com and you can find our guide here, but most importantly, just have fun with it.
