New York Challenges San Francisco for Big-Wheel Bragging Rights

Tour de France has nothing on creative trike racing

With October in full swing, it’s time to start prepping for the most colorful event of the year. You may think I’m referring to Halloween, but actually, this Saturday marks the 7th Annual Big Wheel Race in NYC.

Big Wheel Racing brings out the best of the best in tricycle-racing. Each year adults line up in Central Park with their creative cruisers, including the standard hard plastic variants as well as some more original models. All is asked is that participants dress up and BYOBW (Bring Your Own Big Wheel).

It’s a race to the finish, or until the participants collapse and decide to go for tacos at the previously decided taco joint. And it’s one you won’t want to miss. With big personalities and crazy costumes, the Big Wheel competition will test your limits. Because, it actually is quite difficult to ride a bike five sizes too small.

A similar race happens every year in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, and the NYC race claims to be much faster. Curious what a Big Wheel Race is really like? Check out the video from a previous Big Wheel Race in San Francisco.
