Fresh Gear: Platypus GravityWorks

A gravity-fed water filter that's light, fast and requires zero pumping
Staff Writer

The GravityWorks water filtration system is a godsend for anyone who's ever suffered cramped forearms from pumping a pint-sized water filter after a long day on the trail (and, really, who hasn't?). The system works by simply hanging a dedicated, clearly labeled “dirty” bag of water from any point higher than the corresponding “clean” bag. Then just walk away and let gravity take over, which forces water through a filter element at a rate of 1.75 liters a minute. The whole shebang weighs a little more than half a pound and packs down to practically nothing, so you can stuff it wherever you like in your pack. Additionally, the GravityWorks allows you to carry a whole eight liters of water with you—four liters of unfiltered H2O in the dirty bag and another four of the good stuff in the clean receptacle. Watch the video below (you can just skip to 1:20), and be amazed at how well—and fast—it filters water. Drinkable water in the backcountry has never been this easy.
