Is your belly fat putting your health at risk? This type of fat is known to be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancers. Individuals who have extra belly fat are more likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance.

According to research more than two in three adults are considered overweight or obese and more than one in twenty adults are considered to have extreme obesity.

So why do you keep gaining weight around your mid-section? Your diet is a huge factor. Individuals who eat artificial sweeteners, drink too much alcohol and consume Trans fats are at a higher risk.

There are certain foods that you can eat for a flat stomach, some of which include almonds, cinnamon, berries, legumes and cucumbers; drinking lemon water and green tea will help as well.

1. You’re not getting enough sleep- Lack of sleep can cause increased hunger and appetite, resulting in weight gain. WebMD explains, “according to a 2004 study, people who sleep less than six hours a day were almost 30 percent more likely to become obese than those who slept seven to nine hours.”

2. You’re stressed- Individuals who are overstressed tend to experience a change in their eating habits – eating more. This results in weight gain; extra pounds are usually stored as abdominal fat because the adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormone, makes you hungry for carbs and fat.

3. You’re drinking too much alcohol- Studies have shown that alcohol consumption leads to weight gain. This is because when you drink booze, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat. It also contains tons of sugar.

4. You’re eating artificial sweeteners- Sugar-free foods usually contain artificial sweeteners. It has been shown that they may cause digestive problems along with belly bloating and weight gain.

5. You’re drinking diet soda- Drinking diet soda has been linked to the development of metabolic syndrome and obesity. In a study conducted by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, people who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist sizes that were six times bigger than those who didn’t drink diet soda.

6. You’re eating Trans fats- Trans fats are “created by adding hydrogen to unsaturated fats in order to make them more stable,” according to Authority Nutrition. They have been shown to cause excess belly fat, along with inflammation, heart disease and insulin resistance.
