At some point or another, we have all experienced a difficult night’s sleep. Maybe you begin thinking about everything that happened that day, your mind is racing over the day’s struggles, or you can’t stop thinking about the following day’s tasks.

According to Dr. Mercola, nearly 41 million US adults are sleeping just six hours or less each night, putting them at risk of adverse health effects (such as heart disease and obesity) and potentially fatal drowsy driving linked to lack of sleep.”

Like eating, sleep is essential to your health and overall wellbeing. So how and why are so many of us depriving ourselves from it? Sleep deprivation can lead to serious mental and physical health problems. Some of these include high blood pressure, impaired concentration and weight gain.

Some secrets for your best night’s sleep include reducing your caffeine intake, keeping the same bedtime schedule, meditation, taking a warm bath and smelling some sleep-inducing herbs. Always make sure to cover your windows for darkness, keep your room temperature cool and remove electrical devices away from your head as well.

According to a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation teenagers (14-17) should get 8-10 hours of sleep per night, young adults (18-25) and adults (26-64) should get 7-9 hours and older adults (65+) should get 7-8 hours.

There may be things you’re doing before bed that are interfering with you getting the recommended amount of sleep per night.
