The winter has just arrived and people are starting to get sick around you. I know, you’re trying to do whatever it takes to avoid getting sick. First things first, shake off those cold weather misconceptions.

No, dressing up like Randy from A Christmas Story is not going to keep you from getting sick. You CAN exercise in the cold and still get an efficient workout and drinking a ton of alcohol is not going to keep you warm.

Below is the truth behind some of the many Winter Health Myths.

 

Cold Air Makes You Sick

The cold air does not make you sick! According to healthline.com, “In terms of infectious diseases, germs make you sick, not the cold weather itself. You have to come in contact with rhinoviruses to come down with a cold and influenza virus to contract the flu. The rhinoviruses peak in spring and fall, and flu viruses in winter.”

 

You Shouldn’t Exercise When it is Cold Outside

This is a complete myth! It is perfectly okay to exercise when it is cold out.  I mean… How do you explain winter sports? Winter sports are the perfect way to stay fit and have fun during the winter months.

 

Sunscreen is Not Needed in the Winter

You should definitely wear sunscreen during the winter. Just because you may not see the sun shining down doesn’t mean you don’t need protection.

 

The Cause of Winter Depression is Lack of Sunlight

This is a myth. You may have Seasonal Affective Disorder. In some cases the lack of sunlight may contribute to SAD because it causes the brain to create less serotonin. Symptoms of SAD: Always tired, less energy, weight gain, trouble focusing

 

Drinking Alcohol Helps You Stay Warm

Drinking alcohol may make you feel warmer, but the truth is, your body temperature is actually going down. According to discovery.com, “Alcohol may make your skin feel warm, but this apparent heat wave is deceptive. A nip or two actually causes your blood vessels to dilate, moving warm blood closer to the surface of your skin, making you feel warmer temporarily.”
