Fitness Tip of the Day: Stability for Skiing

Switching ski styles requires a different muscle group

“If you’re transitioning from alpine skiing to telemark skiing, first focus on adjusting your balance to accommodate the different motion you’ll need in telemark skiing. The first few weeks will be a little challenging as you try to figure out your center of balance. I used the exercise ball quite a bit—try lateral lunges where you put one foot on top of a ball and your knee in a squat position on a balance disk. Repeat this up and down on each side, as shown above.”

—Tommy Gogolen is a member of the USA Telemark Team and has been skiing since he was three years old.
