Fit Phone: The 10 Best Fitness Apps

Train intelligently with the help of your iPhone or Android

In case you were wondering, yes, there's an app for everything. With the apps loaded onto my smartphone, it can help me learn a new language, find couches for me to sleep on, mimic the soothing sound of a summer thunderstorm, tell me real estate prices, keep track of my (sadly, failing) hockey team, get me discounted meals, show me where local hiking trails are and even root out a good tap beer near the trailhead. Impressive, right?

Anyway, to the point, there are tons of apps out there to help you get in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, Pew Center data from 2012 shows that among the 19 percent of smartphone users who use health-based apps, nearly 40 percent use at least one fitness-based application to kickstart their health goals. They're cheap to buy (way cheaper than hiring a personal trainer, at least), convenient to use, and could just be the ticket to better fitness.

To get you on your way, we've scoured the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store to put together a roundup of some of the best fitness apps on the market right now, including ones that will motivate you to run, guide you through entire workout programs and even teach you yoga. Now get to it!
