Off The Beaten Path Honeymoon Destinations For An Adventurous Couple

Off The Beaten Path Honeymoon Destinations for an Adventurous Couple

The world is full of exotic destinations; people are constantly visiting many of the same cities where crowds can seem endless. Popular honeymoon locations don't vary much – couples want perfect weather, clean beaches, pristine water and tropical cocktails. This is good news for adventurous travelers who are looking for something a little different because thrilling off the beaten path getaways offers just as many adrenaline-pumping activities, but minus the masses.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Continental U.S. is the second most popular destination for honeymooners. California and Florida are (unsurprisingly) the top two states, but with so many different options to choose from, an underrated adventure destination like Block Island, would make for a more romantic and exhilarating U.S. getaway. This locale boasts a thriving bike culture, lush green hills, towering coastal bluffs and a whopping 17 miles of beaches along the Block Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.

Lake Baikal, Russia

This monstrous Siberian Lake has many claims to fame. Not only is it known for its overwhelming beauty, but it's also the largest (by volume) freshwater lake in the world, the deepest lake in the world and, at nearly 25 million years old, widely considered the world's oldest lake, too. With more than 300 sunny days a year, adventurers have a lot to choose from – hike through alpine meadows or go rafting or on a Jeep safari through Siberia's roads. Windsurfing and kayaking are also favorite options. You can rent bikes, cars, ATVs, and catamarans.

Selfoss, Iceland

Selfoss is just about 35 miles away from Reykjavik, which gets a lot more attention. See the unbelievable beautiful Selfoss Geyser and the famous Keird Crater. "Definitely worth the visit. The colors, the depth and the unusualness of the crater are breathtaking. Even my husband, who is not keen on heights, enjoyed the visit," a TripAdvisor review says. Go on horseback riding and off-road tours through the rustic region. Witness the epic Icelandic sunset and the Northern Lights.

Desert Plantation, Woodville, Mississippi

If you want a Louisiana plantation wedding,  go to the Desert Plantation because of its superb scenery and unsurpassed serenity. But stay for your honeymoon if you want absolute privacy, relaxation and peace. You won't have to go on long hikes to see gorgeous 30-foot high waterfalls, rugged terrain, and unspoiled and stunning nature. Cyclists won't be disappointed either.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

To some it might sound crazy, but to the truly adventurous honeymooners, nothing could be more romantic than setting out to conquer this challenging climb together. Although it's not exactly "popular," Africa, an 18-day trip with Wilderness Travel leads hikers up an uncrowded route to a "Hemingway-style" safari camp at the summit, where the main reward is the absolutely breathtaking views. According to the company, not only have many couples chosen this for a honeymoon trip but they've also seen people propose and even have their actual weddings at the top.

Marrakech, Morocco

Gardens, markets and city squares—these are just a few of the conventional things that become extraordinary works of art in Marrakech. Founded in 1062 A.D., Marrakech has historical roots that run deep with slices of modern thrown in. Ride a camel though the Sahara desert, explore the dunes, see the city from above in a hot air balloon, and bike through the city. Visit this incredible city for the food, sights and, most of all, the experience. In the winter, this former imperial city on the foothills of the Atlas Mountains is a must-see destination and it fits the budget.

Pucon, Chile

Hiking an active volcano, diving, and climbing  are romantic activities. If you want to do all of them in one trip, head to Pucon. At night, relax in a hot spring. Explore the Andes on horseback or on a mountain bike. Camp under the stars in the huge expanse of the Huerquehue National park; and go white water rafting, horse riding and trekking down the daunting Vilarrica Volcano standing 2,860 m tall.

Cong, Ireland

Horseback riding in Cong must be on your bucket list. Nestled among some of the most picturesque forests and woodlands in Ireland, as well as along the stunning shores of Lough Corrib, Ashford Castle in Cong provides a serene and majestic backdrop for riders to explore. The hotel offers trail, carriage and pony rides, as well as private riding lessons available for all ages and levels. Surrounded by woodland paths, lake shores and the mountains of Connemara, the area is described simply as a truly magical riding destination. Other popular activities are kayaking, zip lining, tree climbing and archery.

Lapland, Finland

Stay in glass igloos and log cabins with extraordinary views. They were designed so visitors can enjoy the Northern Lights in their full glory but sleeping there is an amazing experience even if you don't catch them. You can go on a husky and reindeer safari, ice fishing expeditions and snowmobile trips in the winter. Boarding an icebreaker cruise is also popular.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Ancient and peaceful, Hoi An is the perfect destination in Vietnam if you're looking to experience everything the country has to offer. There are several amusement parks, mountains, lakes and national parks in the vicinity for you to explore. Climb the Son Doong Cave; hike to the Cat Cat old village of ethnic groups to learn about distinctive customs that have been lost; and swim in the Cham Island, recognized by UNESCO as the World Biosphere Reserve.

Stuc a’Chroin in Scotland

You will be staying at a Mongolian-style yurt. Consider this glamping spot for a honeymoon as the beautiful Scottish countryside, in the middle of which you'll be staying, makes for the perfect romantic retreat. The yurts have wooden stoves and thick carpets, making you feel cozy and warm, double beds and futons.

Lhasa, Tibet

The trip to Lhasa normally takes you to the heart of Tibet which will be the second home of anyone. You will arrive at the heart of Tibetan Culture, the holy city Lhasa features Jokhang Temple, Ramoche Temple, Potapa Palace etc. which were dating back to 7th century. Take a tour of the Potala Palace where the  Dalai Lama one lived. Tibetan culture is closely connected to Tibetan Buddhism, which makes the city fascinating and unique, especially for religious people. Go on hiking and rafting tours to see the region's lakes, mountains and ancient stones.

Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon is surrounded by water on three sides. Formerly known as Rangoon, it is a garden city of tropical lakes, with no skyscrapers, crowds or hectic pace of life, according to Adventure Myanmar. The magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, dating back 2,500 years, towers the city. The months from November to February are the best time to visit. Go on a day trip to Akauk Hill at the altitude of 2000 feet; visit the ancient city of Thayekhittayar; ride through immense tracts of paddy land; and relax on unspoiled and secluded beaches.

Hayman Island, Australia

Hayman Island is one of the Whitsundays in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, one of the most spectacular places on Earth. Take a helicopter ride to see the mind-blowing natural colors; go snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to see some of the clearest waters ever from up close. Game fishing is a popular activity. Other things to do include golfing, hiking, and particpating in all kinds of water sports.

Virunga Volcanoes, Rwanda

The Virunga Mountains are a chain of eight active volcanoes in East Africa. There are only around 900 gorillas remaining in the world and about 200 of them reside in  Volcanoes National Park, deep within the Virunga Mountains. Hikers can scale the volcanoes. Some go up to heights of 15,000 feet. You'll see plenty of other wildlife as well, including elephants. The Gorilla Trecking Lodge offers all-inclusive accommodation. Most reviews on TripAdvisor all give them five stars for value and service.
