4 Great Places to Find an Affordable Bike

If you’re willing to look in the right places and you’re open to a bike with a couple of miles on it, you can find a great deal

We’ve written before about top-of-the-line bikes and it’s no secret that they don’t come cheap, especially if you’re buying new. But if you’re willing to look in the right places and you’re open to a bike with a couple of miles on it, you can find a great deal. When you’re ready to prioritize value and quality over a shiny new frame, take a look in these places to find a great used bike.

Craigslist
This one’s a no-brainer and a veritable treasure trove for those who live near a city. On my very recent search for a great used bike, I scanned Craigslist several times a day and each day there were at least a dozen new additions. It goes without saying that you’ll need to look carefully at the bike and give it a test ride before putting down money, but there’s no doubt that you can find a great used bike on this site. Ebay is another site worth a look.

Used Sporting Goods Shops
Shops like Play It Again Sports are great places to find used bikes and tons of other sports equipment. Bring something of yours that you no longer use and you can either sell it for cash or get a discount on the bike you want.

Local Shops
My top advice would be to find a shop that specializes in used or recycled bikes. These kinds of co-ops and non-profit shops are great resources and they’re popping up around the country. They’re typically great for the local community (offering education on bikes and sometimes donating funds) and the staff is knowledgeable. I found my used bike at Recycle-A-Bicycle and I would recommend this shop—and shops like it—to anyone.
